Question 1

What is an AI browser, and how is it different from Chrome or Safari?

Accepted Answer

An AI browser has a language model built into the browser itself. It can read the page you are on, answer questions about it, summarize across open tabs, and sometimes complete tasks. A traditional browser just displays pages. Most AI browsers are built on Chromium, so sites and extensions work the same way.

Question 2

Which AI browser is actually free with no hidden costs?

Accepted Answer

Perplexity Comet is free on Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS, though agent features need a paid plan. Opera AI is free with no usage cap. Brave Leo is free with no account required. DuckDuckGo's Duck.ai is free. Paid tiers mostly unlock automation and higher limits rather than basic use.

Question 3

What happened to ChatGPT Atlas?

Accepted Answer

OpenAI announced on July 9, 2026 that it was retiring Atlas, and the browser stopped working on August 9, 2026. It only ever ran on macOS. The agentic browsing features moved into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension. Anyone looking for a similar standalone browser should try Comet.

Question 4

Is Arc browser dead?

Accepted Answer

Not shut down, but frozen. Arc entered maintenance mode in May 2025 and still receives Chromium security patches with no new features. Atlassian acquired The Browser Company in October 2025 and the team now works on Dia. Arc Max has lost several AI features and gained none.

Question 5

Can AI browsers actually automate tasks, or just chat?

Accepted Answer

Both, depending on the browser. Comet on paid tiers, Opera Neon, Chrome's Auto Browse, and Sigma can take actions such as filling forms and working through multi-step tasks. Brave Leo, Opera AI, and DuckDuckGo only chat. Automation works best for repetitive, low-stakes tasks and poorly where judgment matters.

Question 6

Are AI browsers safe for my privacy and data?

Accepted Answer

They carry more risk than ordinary browsers, because page contents go to an AI model. Security researchers have also shown that hidden instructions on a webpage can hijack browser agents, including attacks needing no user action. Brave and DuckDuckGo have the strongest privacy models. Avoid running agents in a profile logged into financial accounts.

Question 7

Do AI browsers work on my phone?

Accepted Answer

Several do. Comet, Edge, Chrome with Gemini, Brave, Opera, and DuckDuckGo all have mobile versions with AI features. Dia is macOS only and Opera Neon is desktop only. Mobile assistants tend to be lighter than desktop versions, with agentic features usually desktop-first.

Question 8

Which AI browser is best for students?

Accepted Answer

Perplexity Comet, mainly because its answers include citations you can verify, which matters for academic work. It is free, runs on every platform, and Perplexity has offered student discounts. Dia is a strong second for Mac users who want file analysis and saved prompts.

Question 9

Do I have to give up Chrome to use an AI browser?

Accepted Answer

No. Gemini in Chrome and Microsoft Edge both add AI to browsers you may already use, with no switching cost. Most AI browsers are also Chromium-based, so bookmarks, passwords, and extensions transfer if you do decide to switch.

Question 10

Which AI browser is most likely to still exist in two years?

Accepted Answer

Browsers attached to large companies with other revenue are safest: Chrome, Edge, and Brave. Comet is backed by a well-funded company, and Dia now sits inside Atlassian. Smaller independent projects carry more risk, and Atlas showed that a high-profile launch guarantees nothing.
