Question 1

What is an AI citation?

Accepted Answer

An AI citation is a reference that an AI search engine attaches to a generated answer. It names the website, study, or publication that supplied the information, usually as a numbered link.

Question 2

How does ChatGPT choose its sources?

Accepted Answer

ChatGPT chooses sources based on content clarity, topical relevance, freshness, authority, and clear entity signals about the publisher. When browsing is on, it reads pages much like a search engine and picks the ones that answer the question most directly.

Question 3

How does Perplexity choose its sources?

Accepted Answer

Perplexity runs each question through its search index in real time, reads the top pages, and cites the pages that best support each claim. It favors relevant, authoritative, and recent content, and it shows the date of every source.

Question 4

Does traditional SEO help with AI citations?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Strong technical health, quality backlinks, clear structure, and direct answers all increase the chance of earning AI citations. AI citation optimization builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

Question 5

How can a website get cited by ChatGPT?

Accepted Answer

Publish clear answers near the top of each page, add structured data, build brand mentions across trusted sites, keep content updated, and write in simple language. Consistency and authority matter as much as keywords.

Question 6

How can a website appear in Perplexity citations?

Accepted Answer

Match the exact intent of common questions, support claims with data and dates, keep pages fresh, and earn links from reputable domains. Perplexity reads pages live, so current information has a clear advantage.

Question 7

Why is AI citation important in a zero click world?

Accepted Answer

Users often get full answers without clicking any link. In that world, the citation itself becomes the visibility, because it places the brand name inside the answer at the exact moment of decision making.

Question 8

What is the difference between AEO, GEO, and SEO?

Accepted Answer

SEO focuses on ranking pages in search results. AEO, or answer engine optimization, focuses on being selected as the direct answer. GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on being cited by AI models that generate responses.

Question 9

How long does it take to get cited by AI tools?

Accepted Answer

Timelines vary. Perplexity can cite a new page within days because it reads the web live. ChatGPT citations tied to training data can take longer and depend on how quickly a brand builds authority and mentions across the web.

Question 10

Are AI citations the future of search visibility?

Accepted Answer

AI citations are a fast growing layer of search visibility. Classic search still drives massive traffic, but AI answers now shape research and buying decisions, so brands that earn citations gain an early advantage in AI search optimization.
